"Nature chose for a tool, not the earthquake or lightning to rend and split asunder, not the stormy torrent or eroding rain, but the tender snow-flowers noiselessly falling through unnumbered centuries."

Winter 2014

2014 greetings! While the lack of regular communications may make it seem as if we are taking a break, the Geauga Family Farms team is in full planning mode for the upcoming summer season. As you will see below, we are confirming our site list for this year and starting to work on delivery routes and schedules. Greenhouses are starting to be prepared for the first round of seedlings. Planning meetings with the farm families, suppliers and administrative staff are allowing us to put finishing touches on some great new offerings for the season. We can't wait to share all of this with you.

While we don't quite have our full site list in place yet, we wanted to let you know about the sites that have already committed for the season. Our hope is to give our members as much time as possible to sign up this spring, by giving you the information you need earlier than in years past. Our shares sold out by Week 5 of the CSA season last year, which meant that we could not provide any mid-season openings. We are anticipating increased interest this year with the potential of selling out by mid-May. We will be planting more to accommodate larger numbers, but wanted to let you know that the best way to ensure your spot is by signing up early. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to let us know.

We hope you enjoy the peace and beauty of the winter season. It's an important part of the life cycle of our farms, and spring will be here before you know it!

Sincerely,

Michelle, Laura and the farmers of Geauga Family Farms

Announcing PARTIAL Summer 2014 pick-up site list

This is a PARTIAL list. If you don't see a convenient pick-up site on this list, or the site where you picked up last season, be patient. We are still adding sites and will announce the complete list in early spring. As in previous years, we'll have locations throughout Cuyahoga, Geauga, Lake and Summit counties.

IMPORTANT: If your school, church or organization would like to host a pick-up site, or if you know of someone who is interested or have an idea for a pick-up site location, please contact us. This is a fantastic community service project for Girl Scouts, church organizations, schools and more!

First Unitarian Church, Shaker Heights

St. Paul's, Cleveland Heights

Ruffing Montessori School, Cleveland Heights

St. Noel, Willoughby Hills

Catholic Montessori School, Kirtland

Mustard Seed Market, Solon

Family Karate, Mentor

Market Café, Downtown Cleveland

Lowe's Greenhouse, Bainbridge

Each site has a specific pick-up day and time. Shares must be picked up within the posted time frame; your share will not be held for you. Once a choice is made and the season has begun, you may not switch sites.

If you choose to pick up at our farm pick-up site (17201 Bundysburg Road, Middlefield, 44062) you must choose one day of the week (Tuesday, Thursday or Saturday) to pick up and stick with it throughout the season. Please indicate which day. Shares left after the pick-up times will be donated to a hunger center or a family in need. If you are out of town on a given week, you may have a friend or neighbor pick up your share for you. It's a great way to share the harvest!

PLEASE NOTE: Some pick-up locations are not able to offer extra items such as beef, cheese and eggs due to not being able to keep the items cool. Please keep this in mind when ordering your share for the season!

Local, sustainably raised pork

Nature's Nook Family Farms has one whole, two halves or four quarters (from a 400-pound sow!) that will be available soon. If you are interested, call Chris Nagy at 440-272-5351 or 440-537-1252 or e-mail her at 4ckn@fairpoint.net. You can place your order exactly as you would like. The hams and roasts will be large, and the amount of bacon above average. Yes, we said BACON! Click here for a flyer about Gloucestershire Old-Spot (GOS for short) pigs/pork.

Keep in touch over the winter on Facebook

We may not be sending out regular newsletters over the winter, but we'll be posting updates on our Facebook page. And you can still keep in touch with us on Facebook too. We'd love to hear from you and to hear stories of what you're doing with the veggies you stored for use during the long, cold winter.

Local food, farming, environment in the news

We have so many things we'd like to share with you regarding the local food movement and things like the farm bill, the latest news on GMO foods, and much, much more, but we don't want to make our newsletter any longer. Until we get our blog up and running on our website, we are going to include links to articles that you may find interesting. Here are a couple. If you run across any articles you think would be of interest to our members, feel free to send us the link for inclusion here.
