"It's spring fever.
That is what the name of it is.
And when you've got it, you want -
oh, you don't quite know what it is you do want,
but it just fairly makes your heart ache,
you want it so!"

Updates

Greetings from Geauga Family Farms!

We have been thankful for the longer days of spring, as they have allowed us to get up a little earlier and work a little later to try to accomplish everything that needs to be done before the start of the season. This weekend's beautiful weather gave us a great opportunity to make progress in the fields. It was a wonderful gift from Mother Nature.

We have a lot of updates and new information to share this week, so we will jump right in!

Warmly,
Michelle Bandy-Zalatoris
~ with Laura Dobson, Rachel Machesky and the farmers of Geauga Family Farms

Help us spread the word
Our spring flyer contest is back! Print a copy of our 2016 season poster, hang it at your business or a local message board, take a picture and send it to us for a chance to win a $20 credit to our farm store for the 2016 season. We will draw the winning name May 10. Hang posters in multiple locations for multiple chances to win!

Download our poster, here

There is also still time to earn farm store credits as part of our April membership drive. During the month of April, if you recommend a new member (someone who has not participated before), and they include your name on the application, we will reward you with a $5 farm store credit to be used during the 2016 summer season. This means that if you recommend five new members, you will receive $25 in credits.

Please note that this offer is good for April sign-ups only.

Special pre-season sale in University Circle
Cleveland Montessori Middle School students to hold farm fundraiser at high school
The Cleveland Montessori Middle School is hosting a spring fundraiser that includes products from Geauga Family Farms. If you can't wait for the start of the CSA season, our members are welcome to participate in this special sale. Students from the school have been working with our farms on special programs over the past few years, and they are excited to add this partnership.

A farm truck will be delivering items to the school Friday, May 20. Orders must be picked up at 10924 Magnolia Drive in Cleveland between noon and 6 p.m. that day. Available items include grass-fed beef, organic eggs, honey, jam, cinnamon rolls, pecan rolls, and spring greens (kale, Swiss chard, lettuce). Orders are due by Friday, May 13.

You may place an order starting early next week for this special sale through our farm store, here. Please note that pricing is slightly higher than our normal prices for these items because this is a fundraiser for our young partners.

Corporate sites
Do you know of any businesses along the I-271 corridor that would be interested in providing a CSA delivery for their employees? Hosting a corporate site is simple - provide an area where we can unload shares each week, and help to market the program to staff members. It's an easy way to provide a special health-focused program for employees. Please contact Laura Dobson at 440-478-9849 if you would like more information about this.

Spring recipes
Spring Salad with Sugar Snap Peas
This salad is crisp and delicious!
Serves 4
6 cups fresh lettuce (washed, dried and cut into bite-sized pieces)
1 cup sugar snap peas (rinsed, ends cut and sliced into ½ inch diagonal pieces)
½ cup crispy fried onions (I like Lars brand)
4 slices of cooked bacon, crumbled
½ cup fresh goat cheese, crumbled
Place ingredients in a large bowl and toss with your favorite dressing. Balsamic vinaigrette and lemon vinaigrette are both great with this salad.

Local food, farming, environment in the news
We have so many things we'd like to share with you regarding the local food movement and things like the farm bill, the latest news on GMO foods, and much, much more, but we don't want to make our newsletter any longer. Until we get our blog up and running on our website, we are going to include links to articles that you may find interesting. Here are a couple. If you run across any articles you think would be of interest to our members, feel free to send us the link for inclusion here.
