Reconnecting
As summer quickly approaches, one of the things we look forward to the most is reconnecting with our members. We delight in seeing the names of members from past seasons appear in our inboxes, and we look forward to adding new members to this wonderful community. Conversations with our site managers remind us of the bonds that have made this program so special. It feels a little like a family reunion, with opportunities to catch up on all that has been happening since our last deliveries in December.

We have spent the last few weeks reconnecting with our fields in a big way, too. It has been great to get out to work with the soil; prepping for the season to come, and getting the early crops in the ground.  The appearance of orderly rows brings a certain comfort this time of year. The cold weather crops have been doing well despite the swings in temperature, setting the stage for a great start to the season.

With all of this focus on reconnecting, it is most important that we reconnect with you! If you haven't had a chance to reserve your share, we hope that you take a few minutes to do so today. You are a part of what makes this a unique experience and we look forward to spending the summer with you.

Warmly,
Michelle Bandy-Zalatoris

Fundraiser update
The Cleveland Montessori Middle School is hosting a spring fundraiser that includes products from Geauga Family Farms. If you can't wait for the start of the CSA season, our members are welcome to participate in this special sale. Students from the school have been working with our farms on special programs over the past few years, and they are excited to add this partnership.

A farm truck will be delivering items to the school Friday, May 20. Orders must be picked up at 10924 Magnolia Drive in Cleveland  between noon and 6 p.m. that day. Available items include grass-fed beef, organic eggs, honey, jam, cinnamon rolls, pecan rolls, and spring greens (kale, Swiss chard, lettuce). Orders are due by Friday, May 13.

Please note that pricing is slightly higher than our normal prices for these items because this is a fundraiser for our young partners.

The farm store is now up and running for this fundraiser. Please follow this link to place your order.

Corporate sites
Do you know of any businesses along the I-271 corridor that would be interested in providing a CSA delivery for their employees? Hosting a corporate site is simple - provide an area where we can unload shares each week, and help to market the program to staff members. It's an easy way to provide a special health-focused program for employees. Please contact Laura Dobson at 440-478-9849 if you would like more information about this.

Spring flavors

Strawberry Scones with Lemon-Basil Glaze
A great way to use the beautiful strawberries that are coming into season!
~ Rachel Machesky

3 cups all-purpose flour
1/3 cup sugar
5 tsps. baking powder
1 tsp. salt
2 sticks chilled butter
1 egg
3/4 cup heavy cream
1 to 2 cups washed and chopped strawberries

Preheat oven to 350. Combine dry ingredients. Cut the butter into the dry, using either fingers or a butter cutter. You can also use a food processor. The butter should look pea-size. Add the egg and cream and stir until just combined. Turn dough out onto a flat surface and gather together to form a ball. Roll into a 10" disc and using a sharp knife, cut into equal sized wedges; you should get eight. Transfer to a lined baking sheet and bake for 22-25 minutes. Cool completely before glazing.

Lemon-Basil Glaze
2 cups powdered sugar
2 Tbsps. fresh lemon juice
1 Tbsps. fresh basil, ribboned
Pinch of salt
Stir until combined.

Pour generously over the scones and allow to dry.

Local food, farming, environment in the news
We have so many things we'd like to share with you regarding the local food movement and things like the farm bill, the latest news on GMO foods, and much, much more, but we don't want to make our newsletter any longer. Until we get our blog up and running on our website, we are going to include links to articles that you may find interesting. Here are a couple. If you run across any articles you think would be of interest to our members, feel free to send us the link for inclusion here.
